Full of great recipes and fun stories, Cooking with Nonna: Sunday Dinner with La Famiglia is a winner。 Pastas, anti-pastas, drinks, and more will be filling your dinner tables in the near future。 There are also numerous helpful tips that I can't wait to try in my kitchen。 Thanks to NetGalley for the e-copy for review。 Full of great recipes and fun stories, Cooking with Nonna: Sunday Dinner with La Famiglia is a winner。 Pastas, anti-pastas, drinks, and more will be filling your dinner tables in the near future。 There are also numerous helpful tips that I can't wait to try in my kitchen。 Thanks to NetGalley for the e-copy for review。 。。。more

This is not "just" a cookbook。 It is a look into family gatherings the Italian way and how much of your history can be found in the kitchen with your own mother or grandmother。 Beautiful photography gave me so many ideas on presentation and the recipes themselves are easy to follow, almost chef level from the first try。 Add this to your cookbook shelf or gift it to those young relatives you'd love to cook with。 This is not "just" a cookbook。 It is a look into family gatherings the Italian way and how much of your history can be found in the kitchen with your own mother or grandmother。 Beautiful photography gave me so many ideas on presentation and the recipes themselves are easy to follow, almost chef level from the first try。 Add this to your cookbook shelf or gift it to those young relatives you'd love to cook with。 。。。more

Cooking with Nonna - Sunday Dinners with La Famiglia by Rossella Rago is a love letter of a cookbook, which captures so beautifully the love for family and the joy of food。 Such a treasure trove of recipes and stories from the heart! When I saw this, I wanted to read it purely for my own childhood memories, of my Italian grandfather who was still cooking when his parents and older brother immigrated in 1921 to New Jersey。 Yeah, I’m an Italian girl from the Jersey Shore, where my Italian grandfather would cook Sunday dinner and his three daughters, their respective families would gather, talk, eat, drink his homemade wine, and watch tv after (and not cable either)。 This is New York and Jersey Italian American cooking and it’s When I saw this, I wanted to read it purely for my own childhood memories, of my Italian grandfather who was still cooking when his parents and older brother immigrated in 1921 to New Jersey。 Yeah, I’m an Italian girl from the Jersey Shore, where my Italian grandfather would cook Sunday dinner and his three daughters, their respective families would gather, talk, eat, drink his homemade wine, and watch tv after (and not cable either)。 This is New York and Jersey Italian American cooking and it’s beautifully presented with photos of the food, as well as the author and her grandmother, the recipes, and her grandmother’s memories。 It’s all lovely and enjoyable to read, for the stories along with the recipes。The contents include homemade pasta and sauces, antipasto, soup and salad, sides, pasta entrees, non-pasta entrees, treats (garlic knots, focaccia, etc。), sweets, cookies, and drinks。 The instructions are written out concisely。 Having grown up eating like this, I really appreciated this cookbook。 eARC kindly provided by Harper Horizon and NetGalley。 Opinions shared are my own。 。。。more

Absolutely LOVED this cookbook by Rossella Rago and her nonna。 <3 Found so many tasty recipes to try in the future and it was really sweet to hear the stories behind a lot of these iconic meals in their family。 I really enjoyed the "nonna's tip" section the most because a lot of the tips answered questions I had following the meals/directions。 I was really hoping for a chicken parmigiana recipe and an authentic meatball recipe and of course - it delivered。 SO excited for this to come out and so Absolutely LOVED this cookbook by Rossella Rago and her nonna。 <3 Found so many tasty recipes to try in the future and it was really sweet to hear the stories behind a lot of these iconic meals in their family。 I really enjoyed the "nonna's tip" section the most because a lot of the tips answered questions I had following the meals/directions。 I was really hoping for a chicken parmigiana recipe and an authentic meatball recipe and of course - it delivered。 SO excited for this to come out and so thankful for the opportunity to look over this eARC! 。。。more

Chock full of fascinating anecdotes, mouthwatering photographs and delectable Recipes, Cooking with Nonna is more than "just" recipes。。。it is about (Sunday) gatherings around the table with family。 Though not Italian I live next door to Italy and adore the fresh ingredients, the idea of family dinners and the role culture plays in its food。 It is strong where I live, too, and really resonates。 Author Rosella Rago highlights 130 simple recipes with a focus on her Nonna Romano and the engrained fe Chock full of fascinating anecdotes, mouthwatering photographs and delectable Recipes, Cooking with Nonna is more than "just" recipes。。。it is about (Sunday) gatherings around the table with family。 Though not Italian I live next door to Italy and adore the fresh ingredients, the idea of family dinners and the role culture plays in its food。 It is strong where I live, too, and really resonates。 Author Rosella Rago highlights 130 simple recipes with a focus on her Nonna Romano and the engrained feeling of Italy regardless of where you may be。 In addition to recipes what really shines is the reminiscing and creating new memories。 So many lovely stories。 One which stands out to me is the tablecloth mention which could be the same with tea towels or aprons。。。anything! Another is the mourning rule story。 My only wish is that the recipe layout would be more accessible with one recipe per one or two pages, clearly delineated。 Perhaps this is an e-book issue which I read。Photographs show Nonna and Rossella elbow to elbow as they create recipes such as sauces for the wondrously instructive pasta section, Stuffed Mushroom with Mozzarella, Frittura di Pesce, Sausage and Provolone Stuffed Hot Peppers , Lentil and Mushroom Soup (especially as it's porcini season so I'll add fresh with the dried), refreshing Fennel and Orange Salad, Linguine with Stuffed Mussels (we often buy fresh mussels), Pork with Vinegar Peppers, Cannoli Tiramisu (one of my favourite desserts is Cannoli and my husband's is Tiramisu) and Almond Ricotta Cheesecake。 I love that new ideas are incorporated into the old, yet in keeping with tradition。 Sometimes recipes may appear complex but when broken into components they really aren't。 Cooking from the heart sometimes takes time。 Cooking with Nonna includes a few time consuming recipes as well as many quick ones which suit any cooking level, including beginners。 This book feels so comfortable and homey! My sincere thank you to Harper Horizon and NetGalley for the privilege of reading from and salivating over this delectable book! 。。。more

Cooking with Nonna is a lovely celebration of Italian and American-Italian food and family。 The finished dishes are beautifully photographed and the recipes look mouth-wateringly good。 Recipes are clearly written and most are achievable by even a novice cook。Thank you to NetGalley, Rossella Rago and Harper Horizon for the Advanced Reader Copy of this book。

I pretty much want to make everything in this cookbook! I have always wanted to make homemade pasta, but found it intimidating。 This cookbook explains the basics and what sauces go perfectly。 It also has a variety of recipes for sides, bread, soups and desserts。 The book was beautifully photographed, but wished it had more (felt every recipe should have a photo)。 All in all a good cookbook to add to your shelf。 I want to thank NetGalley, Rossella Rago and Harper Horizon for the e-ARC of this boo I pretty much want to make everything in this cookbook! This cookbook is love letter to Italian American Nonna's and an homage to their cooking。 I wouldn't say this is the strongest instructional cookbook ever, but it is comprehensive and I loved the narrative stories that went along with each section。 It covers Sunday supper soup to nuts (to cocktails), and I can't wait to try some of these recipes。Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC, in exchange for this honest review。 This cookbook is love letter to Italian American Nonna's and an homage to their cooking。 I wouldn't say this is the strongest instructional cookbook ever, but it is comprehensive and I loved the narrative stories that went along with each section。 It covers Sunday supper soup to nuts (to cocktails), and I can't wait to try some of these recipes。Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC, in exchange for this honest review。 。。。more

Miigweetch NetGalley and Harper Horizon for sending this book for review consideration。 All opinions are my own。 I love Rossella Rago and have been subscribed to her ‘Recipe of the Day’ emails for quite some time。 I even bought the fancy Grattugia della Nonna from her woefully outdated webstore (it works ‘grate’!) So to say that I came to this cookbook with some expectations would be accurate。 Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed, in particular because I felt the book suffered from a lack of photographs。 It’s a cookbook; I literally want a photo of every dish that is being made so I have something to compare it to。 Too many of these recipes did not have an accompanying photo。 Great shots of Rossella and Nonna, now please show us the frittura di pesce, marinated eggplant, lasagna rollups, risotto with meat sauce and the garlic knots! It seems simple but like, I don’t know what I am doing, and I need a visual。 Moreover, I found the layout frustrating。 Many of the recipes extended over to another page with a lot of wasted white space。 The text is small and not easy to read at a glance。 Generally, when I am buying a cookbook, I look at how easy it will be to use “in action” in the kitchen and this book is not a winner on that front; I suggest a larger font。 Instructions could be grouped in a more logical way as well - oftentimes recipes are presented as only having two steps, however I find this misleading - preheating the oven and preparing pans is a step in and of itself, and needs to be respected as such。 Recipes were often accompanied by a story (in particular I am thinking of the recipe for chocolate olive oil ciambella)。 I would have liked to see the recipe ingredients and instructions all on one page, with the anecdotal story following after。 For the record, I’m not a fan of “narrative cookbooks” - just give me the recipe, I don’t need the story。 However, that is sort of part and parcel for Rago’s band。 Fortunately for me, I’m a sucker for a good grandma story, and most of the stories revolve around - you guessed it - cooking with Nonna, so in this instance the gimmick works for me, if the physical book layout can be tweaked a bit。There is good material in this book, and with changes to the presentation it could easily be a five-star cookbook。 I recommend this to anyone looking to scratch their at-home chef itch。 Most of the recipes are accessible and the ingredients are (relatively) easy to source。 Anyone who enjoys eating Italian-American food will probably like the recipes in this book。 。。。more

Growing up, I was lucky to have two honorary Nonnas show me around the Italian-American kitchen。 "Cooking with Nonna: Sunday Dinners with La Famiglia" by Rossella Rago is like being in those kitchens again。 You won't go wrong with any recipes, as Rago starts the reader with the basic pasta and sauce recipes, which are used later as part of more involved recipes。 The Chocolate Olive Oil Ciambella had me looking for my fluted tube pan, finding a stash of Jimmies, and making plans for Sunday desser Growing up, I was lucky to have two honorary Nonnas show me around the Italian-American kitchen。 "Cooking with Nonna: Sunday Dinners with La Famiglia" by Rossella Rago is like being in those kitchens again。 You won't go wrong with any recipes, as Rago starts the reader with the basic pasta and sauce recipes, which are used later as part of more involved recipes。 The Chocolate Olive Oil Ciambella had me looking for my fluted tube pan, finding a stash of Jimmies, and making plans for Sunday dessert。I've already made room for "Cooking with Nonna" in my cookbook collection。 You will too!Highly Recommended: five stars 。。。more

Cooking with Nonna is a wonderful, Italian (and Italian-American) cookbook that is full of delicious, yet easy enough recipes -- both classics and new takes on classics。 Photos are beautiful in this cookbook as well, and all in all this was a very enjoyable read。 There are many recipes that I look forward to trying。

This book is a cross of a cookbook and a family story。 The recipes are mouth watering, photos are incredibly beautiful while the little brief snippets throughout the book have you feeling like a part of Nonna’s familysitting alongside her for Sunday dinner。 I cannot wait to make some of these recipes for my family。 I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review。

There are two kinds of people in this world – those who like a cookbook to just knuckle down and give you recipes, and those who like a cookbook with life ("this is the book of life" the foreword creams), back-story, context, food porn imagery and pages of bumpf about how every dish and every ingredient has to be the authentic thing, gathered under the light of a spring new moon from only the select few mountain peaks, by virgins wearing new clothes and riding a blinded donkey back downhill to p There are two kinds of people in this world – those who like a cookbook to just knuckle down and give you recipes, and those who like a cookbook with life ("this is the book of life" the foreword creams), back-story, context, food porn imagery and pages of bumpf about how every dish and every ingredient has to be the authentic thing, gathered under the light of a spring new moon from only the select few mountain peaks, by virgins wearing new clothes and riding a blinded donkey back downhill to preserve the secret。 You can tell I jest, I am sure – but some recipe guides go to far greater lengths than others about selling themself, and making sure their message and look is spot on and of the greatest importance。 This one? This one starts with hair and make-up credits。Either way, we start with the 'basics' of pasta doughs, and more than once we're told to use a Nonna Knife。 At least the book hasn't told us about this first, so we have to foolishly google it and find that it is, er, a knife。 Much more seriously, this tries to tell you how to make cavatelli and tells you nothing – NOTHING – about how to fashion them。 Ditto, orecchiette, ditto chiusoni。Thankfully things get better, and I mean a lot better。 The basic sauces come next, and then antipasti – arancini, eggplant, artichoke, clams and other posh finger foods。 At least here (beyond the utterly redundant two pages of waffle before each section) the recipe pages are much more concise。 Yes, they have some yack about the dish, but it's pretty much straight on with the necessary。 And for all my snideness I was clipping this soup recipe, saving this salad (well, I have to use a fennel bulb once in my life, surely?!) and so much more。It's quite frustrating, then, that just as this review started with so much that is negative, so this book started with so much extraneous。 Who cares what two women look like when they stare at a bit of broccoli rabe? This can tell us exactly what to do with it, using many traditional-seeming recipes from southern Italy (Bari, Palermo etc etc) clashing with the modern street food ideas of both Italy and the US。 Using vodka in the tomato sauce certainly seemed more typical of the latter, it has to be said, although who to blame for the preponderance of olives I'm not sure。This is a complete Italian cuisine guide, in that it takes us from calzone to mahoosive cakes to cocktails。 Many are the dinner parties one could enjoy rehearsing the heck out of, based on these pages。 Ultimately it is classy and successful, if not in the ways I would really appreciate。 Is any of this freezable, I ask? "Mamma mia, you have-a the food and-a the mouth, what-a you want-a freezer for, eh? Stupido!" is the answer。 The TLDR-minded review is "took against a lot of this, took on board a fair bit", and grudgingly I have to admit the benefits of this outweigh the flaws。 As to what outweighs the cleavage on show in the majority of the wasteful portrait photos, I'll leave for you to find。 Three and a half stelle。 。。。more
